At Adventure Tours Panama our goal is that you have an unforgettable experience with the most best service with us, and of course more importantly, that that experience is positive in every way. We will do everything in our power to ensure this, and so, to that end we have done our best to designate an appropriate difficulty rating to each tour and activity. Also, always remember that the rainy season in Panama is 8 months a year, so expect to get wet! The following will explain the difficulty rating system with regards to each category of activity, but all are based upon the below four level scale:

EASY - suitable for people of all ages and experience levels, these trips include only a minimal element of physical exertion.

MODERATE – suitable for people of good health, some experience and moderate athletic ability, and include an element of physical exertion above the daily average, possibly for extended lengths of time.

DIFFICULT – physically challenging and suitable for experienced athletes in very good physical condition who are used to long, intensive days.

EXPERT ONLY – very physically challenging and involving considerable personal risk. These tours are suitable only for experienced athletes in excellent physical condition who are used to long, intensive days. We have very few of these tours listed, but if this is what you long for, please contact us and if we don't have a trip already, we will put something together that will blow you away.

ADVENTURE TOURS PANAMA HIKING RATINGS

All of our tours which include a significant amount of walking are considered hiking tours. These range from short one or two hours long hikes on established trails to extended treks in wilderness areas. The following grades should be considered in conjunction with each individual tour description.

EASY - suitable for most people in good health, these trips include only a short element of hiking, which is predominately on good paths with a minimum of mud.

MODERATE – this grade is suitable for most hikers and generally involves moderate hikes. However, a reasonable level of fitness is required as these hikes can involve certain amounts of ascent and descent and a variety of slippery, muddy and/or rocky terrain and creek crossings.

DIFFICULT – toughest hikes , physically challenging and suitable for experienced hikers who are used to intensive days. These treks can involve difficult and sometimes uncleared trails, with steep, muddy slopes.

ADVENTURE TOURS PANAMA MOUNTAIN BIKING RATINGS

EASY - our least technically demanding rides, involving short ride distances. With no serious climbs nor steep and sustained descents. We will normally ride on well established tracks and hard pack surfaces.

MODERATE - these are usually longer trails, involving steeper and more sustained climbs, which demand a reasonable amount of effort. This is more technical riding. A good fun challenge for the regular biker.

DIFFICULT - our toughest bike trips involve long narrow trails, big climbs, remote locations and higher altitudes. There may occasionally be some sections where we will have to push or carry our bikes, and lots of mud. These trips will provide a real sustained workout for bikers.

ADVENTURE TOURS PANAMA WHITEWATER RAFTING/KAYAKING RATINGS

Whitewater is generally graded on either one of two scales. We will use the scale that ranks rivers in level of difficulty from Class I to Class VI. Class I is a river with no discernible rapids and maybe minor ripples, also known as a float trip. Class VI has traditionally been considered impassable and if attempted, there would be a very high probability of a fatality.

EASY (Class I & II) - suitable for people of all ages and experience levels, these trips include only a minimal element of physical exertion.

MODERATE (Class III) – suitable for people of good health, moderate athletic ability, and include an element of physical exertion above the daily average, possibly for extended lengths of time.

DIFFICULT (Class IV) – physically challenging and suitable for experienced athletes in very good physical condition who are used to long, intensive days.

EXPERT ONLY (Class V & VI) – very physically challenging and involving considerable personal risk. These tours are suitable only for experienced athletes in excellent physical condition who are used to long, intensive days. This level of trip is rare in Panama and only will be attempted by highly experienced boaters in whitewater kayaks. Any rapids of this magnitude will be portaged by rafters.

ADVENTURE TOURS PANAMA HORSEBACK RATINGS

EASY - suitable for most people in good health and for both regular riders and new learners, these trips include only a moderate element of riding, which is predominately on wide open trails with easy grades.

MODERATE – these trips are suitable for both regular riders and new learners who are very physically fit. Riding days last from 4-8 hours.

DIFFICULT – these trips are suitable for both experienced riders who are very physically fit. Riding days last from 4-8 hours and may involve moderate to difficult jungle trails. It may be necessary to dismount and lead horses for periods of time.
